WHAT IS SMARTSKIN?

The SmartSkin laser is a fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) laser that delivers heat energy to the skin in microscopic channels to lessen discomfort during the procedure as well as speed up recovery from non-fractional lasers.

This energy creates tiny wounds in the skin that stimulate your body’s healing response as it creates new, healthy cells and stimulates collagen production to close up the wounds and protect the skin from future damage. The result is a dramatically enhanced appearance when used to treat the face, chest, and hands.

WHAT CAN SMARTSKIN TREAT?

SmartSkin laser treatment is best suited for people looking for wrinkle reduction, a more even skin tone, and smoother skin texture. It may also be useful in treating scars, stretch marks, and blotchy skin depending on your specific skin condition and tolerance for downtime. Although many patients seek treatment on the face, SmartSkin is also used on the decolletage and hands to treat blotchy skin, crepiness, and poor skin texture.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR SMARTSKIN?

People with a light skin tone who are looking for an improvement in their complexion in regards to wrinkles, pigmentation, scarring, or skin laxity are likely good candidates for SmartSkin treatment. It’s not recommended for darker skin tones as the laser may cause lightening of the skin in the treatment area.

The best way to know if you’re a good candidate considering your skin concerns and health history is to schedule a consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Andrés Sárraga. If you are not a good candidate for SmartSkin CO2 laser based on your skin tone or other considerations, Dr. Sárraga may recommend other nonsurgical options such as Fraxel laser treatment or SkinPen microneedling. For some other patients, Dr. Sárraga may recommend pairing SmartSkin with other procedures to achieve your ideal results.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING SMARTSKIN TREATMENT

SmartSkin’s fractional ablative laser works similarly to other laser treatments, but because it only targets part of your skin, unlike ablative resurfacing treatments, it allows for faster recovery, with patients able to cover any residual redness with makeup after just a few days. For stronger treatments, recovery time can take up to a week.

The procedure begins with Dr. Sárraga applying a topical anesthetic to help ensure your comfort during the procedure. He will then use the SmartSkin handset to treat the desired area, tuning the device’s settings to provide effective treatment for your concerns while not overdoing the procedure, to keep your downtime minimized.

SmartSkin is a relatively quick procedure, with a facial only taking about 20 minutes, and you’ll be able to drive yourself home afterward. He may then apply an ointment to help you feel comfortable before you leave, although it’s likely your skin will still feel tender and swollen.

As you recover, you can take over-the-counter medications to address any discomfort you feel. Dr. Sárraga will instruct you on how to keep your skin moisturized and protected from the sun, and when it’s okay to wear makeup again. Most patients are back to their normal routine in under a week. As the skin heals, it is crucial to avoid direct sun exposure and wear SPF daily. Dr. Sárraga will provide specific instructions for your brief recovery period after SmartSkin CO2 laser treatment. Most patients notice ideal results within only a few weeks after their procedure.
