Living in South Florida, we love being in the sun and outside because of the nice weather. With time, continuous exposure to the sun can cause some of the skin cells to turn into cancer cells.
Dr. Sarraga specializes in excision of these cancerous or precancerous lesions and reconstruction in the face and body. He also performs reconstruction of the eyelid area and reconstruction after having Mohs surgery by a dermatologist. Patients in Aventura, FL can count on Dr. Sárraga for effective, safe skin cancer repair with beautiful results.
ABOUT SKIN CANCER REPAIR
Dr. Sarraga feels that direct excision of most skin cancers, with immediate frozen section microscopic examination of the margins of the area removed by a (hospital) pathologist, and then immediate plastic surgery closure of the area, is the best treatment for most skin cancers. While removing any cancerous of precancerous cells to protect your skin and overall health is the top priority in any skin cancer treatment, utilizing plastic surgery techniques when closing any incisions allows patients to enjoy minimal scarring and enhanced aesthetic results following their treatment. Dr. Sárraga uses advanced techniques, leaning on his extensive plastic and oculoplastic surgery training so that patients will have as little visible scarring as possible. In addition, Dr. Sárraga can restore the appearance of facial features such as the nose, brows, eyelids, or other areas when larger amounts of tissue must be removed due to skin cancer. As an experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Sarraga can work alongside other medical professionals such as dermatologists to help patients with various types of skin cancer achieve beautiful and natural results while improving and protecting their skin health.

The objective, of course, is always to fully remove the skin cancer while minimizing any post treatment deformity or scars. During a consultation, Dr. Sarraga will explain the steps necessary to remove cancerous or precancerous cells and the results you can reasonably expect following your skin cancer repair.
SIGNS OF SKIN CANCER
Skin cancer is very common, especially in sunny climates like southern Florida. Thankfully, treatments tend to be very successful when the cancer is diagnosed early. To protect your skin’s health, it is important to routinely perform self-skin checks at home. Signs of skin cancer can be remembered using the mnemonic device ABCDE: Asymmetry, border, color, diameter, and evolution. Patients who notice moles or similar lesions that are asymmetrical, have changing borders or colors, grow in diameter or are larger than a standard pencil eraser, or otherwise evolve over time should see a medical professional to screen for skin cancer. Some patients are more susceptible to skin cancer than others. This includes patients with fair skin with a tendency to burn or freckle, light eye or hair color, and a family or personal history of skin cancer. It is essential for you to know that once you are diagnosed with a skin cancer especially if you are young that you are likely predisposed to these types of lesions and should be checked with a dermatologist yearly.
RECOVERY AFTER SKIN CANCER REPAIR
Following skin cancer repair, the healing process is relatively minimal. Patients may be instructed to apply ointments or creams to the skin as it heals and to keep the area covered with clean bandages or other dressings. Redness, slight swelling, and sensitivity around the area are common. Most patients require no downtime after their procedures, and pain can typically be managed using over-the-counter medication. As the area heals, it is important to avoid direct sun exposure to prevent hyperpigmentation or other issues. Since excess sun exposure can cause skin cancer, you should avoid it even after healing and remember to apply SPF 30+ daily. Following skin cancer repair, you will have post-operative appointments with Dr. Sárraga to monitor healing and with your healthcare team (such as a dermatologist) to ensure proper skin health.
