Women with large breasts experience more than dissatisfaction with body image. They may experience physical pain and discomfort. Overly large breasts and the weight of excess breast tissue can cause pain and physical conditions that impair a woman’s ability to lead an active life. The emotional discomfort and self-consciousness often associated with having large pendulous breasts is as important an issue to many women as the physical discomfort and pain. Patients in the Miami, Florida area can turn to Dr. Andrés Sárraga for safe, effective breast reduction with beautiful results at ARTIS Institute for Plastic Surgery in Aventura.
WHAT IS BREAST REDUCTION?
A breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure done to remove excess breast tissue and skin to create smaller breasts. This can be helpful in alleviating the discomfort that is associated with large breasts and also creates breasts that are more proportionate to the body.
While a breast reduction can reduce the size of the breasts, it does not address sagging or drooping breasts. If you are interested in repositioning your breasts to a more youthful placement, you may be able to benefit from a breast lift. During a consultation, Dr. Sárraga will evaluate your concerns and review your goals for your procedure to recommend the surgery that is best suited to you.

BREAST REDUCTION CANDIDATES
As with all plastic surgery procedures, patients should be generally healthy overall before pursuing a breast reduction. Most breast reduction patients experience symptoms such as back, neck, or shoulder pain, chafing or skin irritation, or difficulty participating in certain activities such as exercise. Patients also frequently face difficulty finding clothing that fits properly due to excessively large breasts. Some patients, however, choose breast reduction for cosmetic reasons alone. These patients may feel self-conscious about the appearance of their breasts or their overall proportions.
Some health insurance plans will cover breast reduction for certain patients, provided that the procedure is chosen to alleviate physical symptoms. In these cases, patients may be required to try other solutions such as physical therapy or to have a certain amount of breast tissue removed to qualify for coverage.
THE BREAST REDUCTION PROCEDURE
Prior to your breast reduction procedure, you will meet with Dr. Sarraga during your consultation. During this time, you will go over your individual breast reduction goals and expectations, as well as your medical history. Dr. Sarraga will work with you to create a unique breast reduction procedure plan to give you the results you want.
During the procedure, different types of incisions can be used, depending on the amount of skin and tissue that need to be removed from the breasts. Incision options include a peri-areolar incision, which is created around the outside of the areola, the “lollipop” incision, which is made around the areola and down to the crease of the breast, and the “anchor” incision, which is made around the areola, and down to and across the breast fold. Following incisions, the nipple may be repositioned, and excess breast tissue will be reduced. In many cases, liposuction is used to reduce the amount of fat in the breasts and to improve the shape and contour around the breasts; for some patients, liposuction alone is sufficient to create the intended breast size. For patients who receive liposuction alone, small incisions are made in inconspicuous areas, and repositioning of the nipple is not necessary. However, this is not common. Breast reductions are performed under general anesthesia, meaning patients are completely asleep throughout the procedure.

RECOVERY
Recovery from breast reduction will vary, depending on the extensiveness of your procedure. Patients can expect have swelling and bruising, which can be controlled with prescribed pain medication. Most patients need about two weeks of downtime to recover. Physical activity should be avoided for at least a month, and heavy lifting should also be avoided. Throughout the recovery process, patients should wear a supportive surgical bra to protect the breasts as they heal. Dr. Sárraga will evaluate your healing through follow-up appointments and advise when you can safely return to your normal routine. Breast reduction results are immediately noticeable and will improve as swelling subsides and incision scars fade. Patients will typically feel the benefit and improvement early on; after a few weeks of healing you should feel more comfortable and confident with your new breast size.
