WHAT IS SKINPEN^® MICRONEEDLING?

WHAT IS SKINPEN® MICRONEEDLING?

Many patients are familiar with at-home microneedling devices such as dermal rollers. However, these devices produce subpar results and can even cause unnecessary damage to the skin. SkinPen is the first FDA-approved microneedling device used by professionals such as Dr. Sárraga. The treatment is also known as collagen induction therapy. SkinPen uses precise microneedles to create tiny injuries in the skin, triggering the natural healing process. As the skin heals following SkinPen treatment, additional collagen is produced. This results in smoother and more youthful-looking skin. The treatment is safe, minimally invasive, and pain-free.

HOW DOES SKINPEN^® MICRONEEDLING WORK?

At the ARTIS Institute for Plastic Surgery in Aventura, we use the SkinPen^® to conduct microneedling treatments. This minimally invasive procedure is performed in-office, with little or no recovery time needed. It can treat the face, neck, and décolletage and most areas of the body.

To begin a topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area to ensure patient comfort. Then, the skin pen will create precise micro-wounds in the skin to stimulate collagen production. This new collagen is the building block of healthier younger skin, and repeated treatments will create a resilient, even complexion. Once the Skin Pen creates micro punctures on the skin, platelet-rich
plasma (PRP) can be applied and immediately absorbed to help stimulate further collagen production. This treatment can take anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour to complete, depending on the size of the treatment area. Patients may know the microneedling and PRP combination treatment as the celebrity-favorite “vampire facial.”

SkinPen microneedling treatment can take anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour to complete, depending on the size of the treatment area. In most cases, patients are recommended to receive at least three sessions of SkinPen treatments to achieve their ideal results. The total number of recommended treatments will vary depending on the condition you wish to treat, your goals for the procedure, your skin type, and other factors.

SKINPEN RESULTS AND RECOVERY

Following treatment, the skin may appear red and feel like a mild sunburn. Redness usually lasts for about 24 hours. Because this treatment is minimally invasive, patients can feel free to return to their everyday routines as soon as they feel comfortable. Dr. Sárraga will give you specific aftercare instructions. Generally, patients can return to all normal activities so long as they avoid excess sun exposure as the skin heals. Patients may be instructed to avoid applying makeup or certain skincare products until side effects subside.

A course of 3-6 treatments is commonly recommended to receive optimal results. These treatment sessions are typically scheduled within the span of about four weeks. Dr. Sárraga will suggest a custom treatment plan based on your concerns and goals.

Most patients see ideal SkinPen results about six months after their final session. These results will gradually appear over time as new collagen continues to develop. SkinPen results are long-lasting, but not permanent. As needed or desired, patients may choose to schedule maintenance treatments to keep up their SkinPen results.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

If you want to improve the appearance of skin blemishes, scars, wrinkles, or lines, you may be able to benefit from microneedling. The SkinPen^® works on all skin types and is great for those who do not wish to undergo a surgical procedure. SkinPen microneedling is a good option for patients of multiple skin tones. It can be useful for patients who wish to improve fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, uneven skin tone and texture, and more.

While SkinPen is safe for a majority of patients, some conditions may disqualify you from safely undergoing the treatment. This includes skin cancer, pregnancy, infection, or certain allergies. During a consultation, Dr. Sárraga will carefully evaluate your concerns and overall health to determine whether SkinPen is your best option.
