Many are familiar with chemical peels, which are an excellent non-surgical treatment with options for a wide range of skin types and concerns. As a popular treatment option, it is crucial for patients to choose an experienced, knowledgeable professional for their chemical peel service. In the Miami area, many patients choose board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Andrés Sárraga for safe and effective chemical peels in Aventura, FL.
WHAT ARE CHEMICAL PEELS?
Simply put, a chemical peel is a cosmetic procedure in which a chemical solution is applied topically to the skin to cause exfoliation. This results in smoother, more youthful-looking skin. Typically, this procedure is performed on the face, but the neck, decolletage, or hands can also benefit from chemical peels.
Several types of chemical peels are available, with various product lines and formulas to choose from. During a consultation, Dr. Sárraga will evaluate your skin type and concerns to recommend the best chemical peel option for you. Generally speaking, chemical peels fall into three categories:
- Light chemical peels cause minor, surface-level exfoliation. These peels contain milder ingredients like alpha-hydroxy acid and only penetrate the outermost layer of the skin. Light chemical peels are also referred to as superficial peels.
- Medium chemical peels contain ingredients such as trichloroacetic or glycolic acid. These chemical peels cause more thorough exfoliation, reaching the middle layers of skin cells and resurfacing the outer layer of cells. These peels are recommended when patients wish to remove damaged skin cells.
- Deep chemical peels fully penetrate the middle layer of skin cells. This means that patients will see the most significant results and removal of any damaged skin cells. While results from deep chemical peels are significant, they also require more downtime. Deep chemical peels typically utilize ingredients like phenol or trichloroacetic acid.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A CHEMICAL PEEL?
Many patients may be good candidates for a chemical peel. The treatments are suitable for a range of concerns given the customizable nature of the treatments and the number of chemical peel options available. Some reasons patients choose chemical peels include:
- Wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging
- Sun spots or age spots
- Acne scars
- Uneven skin tone
- Uneven or dull texture
While chemical peels are generally safe, patients with certain health concerns may not be suited to the treatment. This includes patients who are pregnant, have a personal or family history of keloid scarring or other poor scarring, those with frequent or active cold sores or other infections, and patients who take the acne medication isotretinoin. During a consultation, Dr. Sárraga will review your health history, skin type, and concerns to determine whether a chemical peel is a safe and suitable treatment option for you.
HOW DO CHEMICAL PEELS WORK?
Chemical peels can be performed in our comfortable office. Prior to the peel, the skin is thoroughly cleansed. For patients undergoing a medium or deep chemical peel, a topical or local anesthetic may be administered to maintain comfort throughout the procedure. The chemical peel solution is then applied to the skin using a brush or similar tool. Dr. Sárraga or another member of our staff will carefully monitor the chemical peel’s progress, taking care to time the peel’s contact with your skin. Generally, chemical peels are left on the skin for about 15-20 minutes, depending on the peel you are receiving. During this time, you may feel a warming, tingling, or stinging sensation. For medium or deep chemical peels, fans may be directed to the skin to increase comfort. When the peel has completed processing, it will either be directly removed or neutralized with an additional solution.
RECOVERY AND RESULTS AFTER A CHEMICAL PEEL
Recovery after a chemical peel varies depending on the type of peel you have received. Generally speaking, patients may notice changes in the skin’s color—redness or a white, gray, or blue tint to the skin can occur. The skin will also be sensitive and begin to peel after the treatment. Dr. Sárraga will explain expectations during a consultation.
Deep chemical peels require the most extensive recovery. Patients will experience significant swelling and some discomfort due to the extent of the peel. Other side effects can include throbbing or burning sensations as the skin regenerates. This process typically takes about two weeks, after which some residual side effects such as redness may remain.
After the recovery period, patients will notice smoother, more youthful skin. Wrinkles, fine lines, and discoloration will be reduced or even completely absent, and the skin will appear firmer.
