During the aging process, you may notice that your wrinkles on your forehead and around your eyes become more noticeable. Neuromodulators (most commonly known as Botox) are specially designed medications that can be injected into specific facial muscles in order to “quiet” them down and thereby making the wrinkles less apparent. WHAT IS BOTOX®?
Botox® is an injectable treatment made up of Botulinum Toxin Type A to correct lines and wrinkles on the upper region of the face. This treatment is commonly used to address wrinkles across the forehead, glabellar lines between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet. Botox is the most well-known neuromodulator injectable, which means it works similarly to products including Dysport, Jeuveau, and Daxxify. While these products are similar, both injectors and patients may have a personal preference. If you are unsure which product is best for you, Dr. Sárraga can make a recommendation during a consultation.
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BOTOX?
Botox is a great option for many patients who have dynamic wrinkles, or those caused by making repeated facial expressions such as squinting or frowning. This includes “11 lines” between the eyebrows, crow’s feet, horizontal forehead lines, and more. Other wrinkles and lines are caused by volume loss, meaning they are more effectively treated using dermal fillers. Often, patients receive a combination of Botox and other injectables to acheive an overall more youthful, balanced appearance. While Botox is generally safe for most patients, certain health conditions or allergies may disqualify you from being a suitable candidate. For this reason, it is important to share your complete health history during your consultation. Dr. Sárraga will help you determine whether Botox is right for you.

HOW DOES BOTOX WORK?
BOTOX® Cosmetic works by weakening the muscles that cause the skin to wrinkle in certain areas. If the underlying muscle doesn’t contract, the overlying skin won’t wrinkle! This “medicine” is designed to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes. During your personal consultation, Dr. Sarraga will determine whether you are a good candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic and proceed from thereafter discussing the considerations with you.
THE BOTOX® TREATMENT
During your treatment session, a topical anesthetic can be applied to the treatment area to ensure your comfort. Then, Botox® will be injected using a thin needle. Treatment is typically short, only lasting about 15 minutes. There is little to no downtime associated with Botox® treatments, with mild bruising and swelling being the most common side-effects.
Our clinical experience has shown that throughout time with continued use of Botox, there is the added benefit of “preventing” future wrinkles, especially in the area between the eyes (eg. glabella). In addition, when performing periorbital rejuvenation with surgery or fillers, we will sometimes recommend the use of these medications in order to enhance your results.
Botox is made of a toxin and can thereby be harmful in the wrong hands; rest assured that Dr. Sarraga is a board certified plastic surgeon with years of experience performing these kinds of treatments.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER BOTOX INJECTIONS
No downtime is required after Botox injections. This means that patients can immediately return to their normal routines, though care should be taken to avoid direct sun exposure at the injection site, strenuous activity, or alcohol consumption. These can increase the risks of side effects such as bleeding or bruising. Patients may experience mild swelling, tenderness, or redness at the injection site, which should resolve quickly.
Botox results are not immediately noticeable. Results will begin to appear within a few days, but final results are typically not seen before 1-2 weeks after receiving the injections. At this point, patients may choose to receive a touch-up injection to improve upon or adjust their results.
Botox results are not permanent. On average, results from Botox injections last about four months. Some patients find that their Botox results last longer as they continue to receive routine injections over time. As results begin to subside, you can receive maintenance injections if you choose. During a consultation, Dr. Sárraga can help you determine a suitable long-term treatment plan.
