Sometimes, men and women can feel that their chin is not proportionate to the rest of their face. A weak chin can make the nose appear larger than it really is. Chin augmentation can be done using facial implants to help the chin and jaw to appear more prominent and to enhance your overall facial features. For patients in the Miami, FL area, Dr. Andrés Sarraga at the ARTIS Institute for Plastic Surgery in Aventura can provide chin implants with beautiful results.
What are Chin Implants?
Chin implants are commonly used in cosmetic surgery to enhance a small or recessed chin and enhance facial harmony in facial features that lack proportion. This procedure, also known as facial chin augmentation, can improve the balance between the chin, nose, neck, and other facial features. For individuals with a weak or recessed chin, implants can enhance their overall facial appearance and help improve facial harmony.
Chin implants are often made from silicone chin implants or GORE-TEX® and may be customized to fit the face. These implants are flexible yet firm, allowing them to look and feel similar to natural tissue once positioned. The shape and size selected will depend on the patient’s anatomy, treatment goals, and the dimensions of the patient’s chin bone. An implant may be especially beneficial when a small chin bone contributes to an underdeveloped profile.
During chin augmentation surgery, Dr. Sarraga carefully places the selected implant around the existing chin structure. This can help a recessed chin improve definition while maintaining natural-looking proportions. Unlike chin reduction surgery, which reduces an overly prominent chin, augmentation adds projection and definition.
Who Is a Candidate for Chin Implants?
Men and women with a receding or pointed chin, prominent nose, fleshy neck, or disproportionate profile may be candidates for chin implant surgery. Most chin augmentation patients pursue the procedure as a permanent solution to strengthen a recessed chin and create better balance among their facial features. Ideal chin augmentation patients experience concerns about limited chin projection but are otherwise in good general health and have realistic expectations.
Those who are in poor health, have taken Accutane® within the past six months, or take anticoagulants may not be appropriate candidates. Patients should also be nonsmokers or willing to stop smoking before surgery and throughout the healing process. A consultation with Dr. Sarraga can determine whether facial augmentation surgery is appropriate for your individual needs.
Chin Implant Procedure and Options
A chin implant procedure is an outpatient facial plastic surgery procedure that is performed under general anesthesia. In some cases, local anesthesia with sedation can be used. To insert the custom-fitted implant a small incision is made either under the chin or inside the mouth. It is through this incision that space is made for the implant before it is inserted and positioned correctly around the chin bone. After the implant has been placed, your plastic surgeon will close your incision with sutures. On average a chin implant surgery takes around 1 hour to perform. You can have an additional surgical procedure done at the time of your chin implant to best enhance your facial contours. If you prefer not to have an implant placed, speak to Dr. Sarraga as in some cases the enhancement may be able to be done using fat injections (grafting).

Recovery following chin surgery usually takes around 7 days. There is little downtime associated with the chin enhancement procedure and discomfort can easily be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. There will be an initial lip and chin discomfort and sometimes dysfunction that will improve after a few weeks. For a minimum of 1-2 weeks following your procedure, you will need to sleep with your head in an elevated position to minimize swelling. In some cases, your provider may suggest a liquid diet for the first few days after surgery to decrease stress and pressure on the jaw and your incisions. You will be able to resume strenuous activity around 3-4 weeks after surgery, but your provider will share timelines specific to your personal recovery. Most patients will notice the final results around 3 months post-op after the swelling has gone down completely.

During your consultation, Dr. Sarraga will evaluate your overall health and your aesthetic goals to recommend whether chin implants are your best option. For some patients, procedures such as rhinoplasty, facelift or neck lift, liposuction, or Coolsculpting (fat freezing) may be better options to meet their goals. Dr. Sarraga may also suggest pairing these procedures with chin implants to enhance the overall results and create a proportionate, beautiful, and natural look.
