There are many factors that can cause breasts to lose their youthful shape and position on the chest, including pregnancy, breastfeeding, fluctuations in weight, aging, and hereditary reasons. A breast lift procedure can help to rejuvenate the breasts to a perkier position, while also reshaping and relocating the nipple and areola. Patients in the Miami area choose Dr. Ándres Sárraga for excellent breast lift results at the ARTIS Institute for Plastic Surgery in Aventura.

WHAT IS A BREAST LIFT?

Also known as mastopexy, a breast lift raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the skin and breast tissue to reshape and support the new contour. Sometimes, the areola becomes enlarged over time with large or sagging breasts, and a breast lift can reduce this as well. A breast lift surgery can rejuvenate your figure with a breast profile that is youthful and uplifted.

A breast lift is different from breast augmentation with breast implants, which is a cosmetic surgery procedure that’s performed primarily to enhance the size or correct symmetry of the breasts, not necessarily the breast shape. A breast lift is meant to change the position of the breasts to a more youthful one. Any size change will be toward having smaller breasts, although it is not as extensive as a breast reduction. Breast lifts also cannot improve upper pole fullness. If you wish to augment the size of your breasts, you may want to look into breast augmentation surgery.

THE BREAST LIFT PROCEDURE

The technique used during your breast lift procedure will be dependent upon the size and shape of your breasts, the size and position of your areolas, the amount of sagging in the breasts, and the skin quality of your breasts. Dr. Sarraga will work with you to determine which technique works best for your individual goals, lifestyle, and desired look.

The procedure can be done using a selection of breast lift incision options. These include:

  • The peri-areolar incision (sometimes called a “donut lift”), which is made around the areola
  • A “lollipop” lift incision, which is made around the areola and down to the breast crease
  • The “anchor” lift incision, which is created around the areola, down to the breast crease, and along the breast crease as well.

After the appropriate incisions are made, the tissues are lifted and the underlying breast tissue is reshaped. The nipple and areola may also need to be repositioned to a more youthful position so they point forward instead of down. Excess skin will be removed, and any remaining skin will be tightened, and incisions closed meticulously to reduce the likelihood of unfavorable scarring.

BREAST LIFT INCISION OPTIONS

Full Lift Mastopexy

In a full lift mastopexy, incisions are made around the areola, vertically between the areola and breast crease, and horizontally across the breast crease. This allows for the most significant changes to be made during the breast lift procedure.

Vertical or Lollipop Mastopexy

In a vertical or lollipop mastopexy, an incision is made around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease.

Periareolar

In a periareolar mastopexy, incisions are made around the areola alone. This allows for the least amount of visible scarring.

BREAST LIFT RECOVERY AND RESULTS

After your breast lift procedure, you may be required to wear a special surgical bra to help assist with healing and control swelling. Some patients may have drains coming out of their breast lift incisions, which Dr. Sarraga will tell them how to monitor and care for.

Swelling and bruising are common side effects, but prescribed and over-the-counter oral pain medication can help to control any discomfort. While recovery time will vary from patient to patient, most individuals can return to a desk job after a week. Strenuous activity should be avoided for at least a month, and patients can slowly return to their everyday routines.

Breast lift results can be seen as soon as swelling subsides, which typically occurs within a few weeks of the procedure. Breast lift results are not considered permanent, as the natural aging process or factors such as future pregnancies or breastfeeding may change the appearance of the breasts. To maintain results, it is important to maintain a stable and healthy weight over time.
