What is Medical Weight Loss?

Medical weight loss at The Artis Institute for Plastic Surgery typically involves certain weight loss medications (GLP-1s and lipotropic injections), consults with our board-certified physician, Dr. Amarie Negron, and a healthy diet and exercise plan.

GLP-1s Weight Loss Drugs

GLP-1 drugs, also called GLP-1 agonists and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, have been proven to be highly effective at helping with weight loss and treating obesity. The prescription medications mimic the GLP-1 hormone that is naturally released in the body in response to eating. They work by making you feel fuller longer, regulating your blood sugar (lowers blood sugar), and slowing down how fast your stomach empties. All these characteristics allow it to help many patients lose weight and keep it off.

The medications are typically administered subcutaneously as a weekly injection. At your first consultation, we’ll show you how to properly inject the medication, and from there, you can administer it at home or come in for weekly injections.

Lipotropic Injections

Lipotropic injections are a host of nutritional supplements, vitamins, and amino acids that can help boost your metabolism and reduce or remove fatty deposits in the liver. These injections can kickstart your weight loss journey and be a perfect pairing with exercise and a reduced-calorie diet.

What’s included in a lipotropic injection? Vitamin B12 is one of the most common ingredients, but they can also include choline, inositol, methionine, and other B complex vitamins. These nutrients can help break down fat, increase energy levels, and remove toxins from the body.

Lipotropic injections are injected intramuscularly by the physician or medical assistant at the office.

Weekly Appointments for Weight Management

To start your medical weight loss journey, you’ll first have a consultation with Dr. Negron. She will review your medical history, listen to your concerns, and answer any questions you have. Typically, blood work is also done to see if you are a good candidate for the injections. Patients are monitored weekly with In Body Assessments, and their plan of care is tailored and adjusted weekly by the physician. She is also who you will meet with for your weekly follow-ups to support weight loss. These appointments are crucial to ensuring you’re on the right track.

Medical Weight Loss Candidates

Almost anyone looking to lose weight is a good candidate for medical weight loss. We also recommend that your BMI (body mass index) be 30 or higher or 27 or higher if you have a weight-related medical condition like diabetes, kidney disease, or high blood pressure.

This treatment is also extremely beneficial for patients who have tried to lose weight on their own but haven’t had much success. You should also be ready to stick to healthier habits and make permanent changes. These medications have also been used in patients with autoimmune disorders such as Psoriatic Arthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis with great success.
