Over time, lines and wrinkles will eventually appear on your skin, which can cause you to look older than you feel. If you are noticing lines and wrinkles, as well as other signs of facial aging, you may be able to benefit from an injectable treatment. However, with Botox and many fillers on the market, it can be hard to know which one is right for you. Read on to learn more about the difference between your options.
Neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport & Xeomin)
Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are injectable treatments made up of botulinum toxin type A, a toxin meant to temporarily relax facial muscles that contract and cause wrinkles. This helps to smooth lines in the upper face, including horizontal forehead lines, vertical lines between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet. Additionally, botox can be used to elevate corners of the mouth, lift eyebrows, improve strong neck bands, relax TMJ (jaw related) symptoms, soften a gummy smile and “bunny lines” on the nose. Results from Botox can usually last 3-4 months before a retreatment is needed.
Botox is a great way to not only improve already existing lines, but also prevent them from occuring or getting deeper. Many of our patients start injecting light doses of Botox in their 20’s, thus using this easy treatment prophylactically, in order to age wrinkle-free.
Fillers
Unlike Botox, fillers work to smooth lines and wrinkles by adding volume under the skin. They can also help to restore lost volume in the cheeks and lips. Most fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane products, are made up of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that attracts water under the skin thereby volumizing and reducing lines and hollowing. Fillers are most commonly used to smooth the appearance of marionette lines and nasolabial folds, as well as restore lost volume in the cheeks and plump the lips. Other areas where fillers can be helpful include temples, under the eye indentations, hands and deep acne scars.
Hyaluronic fillers often last from 6 months up to 2 years, depending on the filler type and area injected. There is also a well known filler Calcium-Hydroxyapatite filler better known as RADIESSE that is great for shaping the face and cheeks; your provider can recommend which one is best for you.
Which One is Right for You?
Overall, the main differences between these treatments are the kinds of wrinkles that they target. Botox targets dynamic wrinkles, which are wrinkles caused by facial expressions such as smiling and frowning over time. Fillers target lines and wrinkles caused by lack of collagen, fat loss and loss of elasticity due to the aging process. The type of injectable treatment needed will depend on the cause for your lines and wrinkles.
