WHAT IS JUVÉDERM?
Juvéderm is an FDA-approved Hyaluronic acid filler to smooth away wrinkles around the nose and mouth. Created with HYLACROSS technology, its consistency is smoother than other dermal fillers available, for a natural look. The hyaluronic acid in Juvéderm’s formula binds with water within the skin, creating a firm and hydrated look while essentially filling in wrinkles or restoring lost volume. Juvéderm is also formulated with lidocaine to ensure a comfortable treatment session for all patients. The most common areas treated with Juvéderm include frown lines, under-eye hollows, and the contours of the cheeks and jawline. Juvéderm can also be used to plump the lips. Several formulas of Juvéderm are available. These include Juvéderm Voluma XC, Juvéderm XC, Juvéderm Vollure XC, Juvéderm Ultra XC, and Juvéderm Volbella XC. These formulas are similar overall, with slight variations designed for different treatment areas or intended purposes. JUVÉDERM CANDIDATES
Individuals who are in good health and have realistic expectations for the outcome of their treatment are often the happiest with their results. It is important to tell Dr. Sarraga if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a history of severe allergies during your consultation. Patients should also not take medications including aspirin or ibuprofen or supplements such as St. John’s wort prior to their injections. It is also best if you are a nonsmoker. These considerations will help you avoid unnecessary side effects including excessive bruising.
Juvéderm is best for fine lines and wrinkles caused by a reduction in facial volume over time. This commonly includes nasolabial folds, perioral lines (also called lipstick lines or smoker’s lines), or marionette lines. The product can also be used to restore lost volume in areas such as the cheeks or under-eyes or to enhance areas like the cheekbones, lips, or jawline.

THE JUVÉDERM PROCEDURE
In most cases, Juvéderm injections can be administered immediately following your consultation. The treatment area will be carefully cleansed to prevent any complications, injection sites will be precisely marked, and a topical numbing agent may be applied. This is not always necessary, as the lidocaine in Juvéderm’s formula takes effect quickly and injections are generally well-tolerated by patients. Juvéderm injections can be completed quickly in our comfortable office setting, with many appointments completed in as little as fifteen minutes. Patients may then return to their normal routines.
JUVÉDERM RESULTS
There is no recovery time needed after Juvéderm injections, and most patients can return to work immediately after. Some minor side effects, such as swelling, redness, or tenderness are expected. These should resolve quickly, typically within a few hours. Bruising may also occur. Dr. Sárraga will recommend that you avoid strenuous activity including exercise, drinking alcohol, applying pressure to the injection area, or taking blood-thinning medications to prevent unnecessary bruising or bleeding after your treatment. Results will be visible immediately after treatment and can last up to one year. The body will naturally and safely metabolize the hyaluronic acid in Juvéderm, which is why results are not permanent. Some patients may require touch-up appointments every 3-4 months to maintain optimal results. Dr. Sárraga can explain long-term treatment plans during a consultation. Patients who are looking for more permanent results may consider other options such as fat grafting.
