Different factors can cause changes in weight, such as aging, lifestyle changes, and certain medical conditions. However, you may find diet and exercise fail to get rid of stubborn extra fat in specific areas. Liposuction and CoolSculpting from Storch Plastic Surgery are popular ways to remove excess fat with precision, but they differ. Learn how they differ and which one best suits you.

Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction remains the second most popular cosmetic procedure behind breast augmentation, with even less invasive contouring options available. A doctor inserts a small, hollow needle into the treatment area to drain fat. In many cases, a numbing agent is used to eliminate pain before using the needle.

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, but you may be given anesthesia depending on the number of treatment areas. The procedure commonly takes one to two hours, and you should be able to go home the same day.

CoolSculpting Procedure

CoolSculpting, a completely non-invasive procedure, uses an FDA-approved cryolipolysis tool to freeze and eliminate fat. First, a CoolSculpting technician applies a proprietary gel pad to freeze the fat. A vacuum on the applicator sucks the fat close to the surface and keeps it there for 30 to 40 minutes. When the fat cells are exposed to low temperatures, they crystallize.

Once they have completely frozen and died, the technician removes the pad and gently rubs the treatment area to break the crystals, and the body will remove them naturally through the liver over the course of the next few weeks.

Which One Should You Choose?

The procedure you choose depends on your aesthetic goals and how fast you want to achieve them. If you want to reduce fat in a specific area, such as correcting a double chin, without surgery and little recovery needed, CoolSculpting may be right for you. However, it may require several months and multiple sessions for the most dramatic results.

CoolSculpting isn’t designed to remove large amounts of fat from the body. Instead, it is designed to be a targeted approach to contouring precise areas of the body that need a slight reduction of fat to achieve the look you desire.

If you want permanent results on multiple areas of the body, liposuction is usually the preferred procedure. Liposuction has a longer recovery time, which may mean you will need to schedule time off work as you recover. The advantage is you will only need to do liposuction once, which means it could cost less overall. Another advantage is you can have fat transferred to another area of the body that you want reshaped.
